Story Summary:
From an early age, Hussein had a passion for teaching and used to teach his younger siblings and other children from his neighborhood, it was something that brought him joy. Originating from Aldalanj, South Kordofan, Hussein first started his teaching journey in 1993, amounting to 29 years now, as a teacher for the middle stage, then for the primary stage where he currently teaches. Now 52, Hussein is a teacher and the headmaster of Alizdihar Primary Public School. Inspired by his mentor Saleem Osman, a middle school principal, Hussein fondly recalls how it was his special way of teaching and overall charming personality that encouraged him to follow the same path.

As an educator, Hussein faces many challenges in getting his message across, such as non-existent government funding, very poor school infrastructure, lack of teachers and the unavailability of school supplies like textbooks and chalk. To help improve the situation, Save the Children has provided support by building new classrooms, distributing copybooks, chalk, seating desks and sportswear.

Quotes from Hussein:
“We are in dire need of teachers, currently we have children in primary and middle stages (8 classes) against six teachers only, which is far from enough”. We ask the state to provide a teaching staff that can help with this great responsibility. “Officials must come and visit the school to see for themselves the situation we operate in, not just read the reports delivered to them”. Secondly, this teaching staff should be trained and qualified or else they will not be of much help. “When we asked the responsible body in the ministry, we found out they stopped teachers training programs 7-8 years ago”. Additionally, we need textbooks, as last year we were only provided with textbooks to cover teachers. Adding to the previous points, Hussein says “we need seating desks for children, as the current ones are 13+ years old and not suitable, almost scrap. As things stand, three, four and sometimes five children cram in one desk that is 180 cm long”.
Lastly, we teachers are paid very low wages, not enough to cover a week’s expenses. My personal experience, a PhD holder, teacher and school principal, my salary is below 80,000 SDG ($140). I have children in primary, secondary schools and college. I work extra hours in a private school to try and increase my sources of income. I urge the authorities to look closely at teachers’ situation. While public workers in all industries go on strikes and demand wage increases, teachers have never stopped working and are doing their jobs tirelessly and with a great sense of ownership. I have attended four workshops with Save the Children which reflected positively on my work. The success rate which I achieved as a principal has never been matched throughout the school’s lifetime, something which makes every teacher in the school and myself very proud.

How is Save the Children helping (or did we help):
“With all the difficult conditions we teachers had to endure and still are, a main reason for our success has been the massive support of Save the Children”, says Hussein. We managed to prepare two classes for the state’s final exams, and the success rate was 81% and 65%. The major reasons for this achievement were the different things done by Save the Children, starting with building two new classrooms and an office that enabled children to study in a beautiful environment that was the talk of the whole neighbourhood. In addition to providing us with chalk, which is very expensive and used to be purchased individually, copybooks and sportswear. This provided physical and psychological support to students and encouraged them to continue learning. Adding to this success, Save the Children held training workshops for teachers and PTA members to guide on how to make the school’s environment appealing to children.

Issues faced throughout his career:
Education in the 1980s, 90s and 2000s differed greatly, and one of the key drivers is the students’ will to learn. Hussein summarized the obstacles faced during his career in the following points; 1) Government negligence to education issues and not using well-planned methods for teaching. In the beginning of the 1990s, a method of teaching called ‘the inclusive way’ was introduced, which was overwhelming for students and not successful, as opposed to the formerly used ‘partial way’ of learning. This method proved its unworthiness in Sudan and was widely criticized by all operatives in the education sector. However, supported by the old regime, the inclusive way continued for almost three decades. 2) The economic situation; a stellar number of children dropped out of school due to financial reasons such as the unavailability of curricular books, unavailability of school meals and the illiteracy of parents themselves. 3) The school environment: this includes the infrastructure and buildings of the schools. Classrooms and desks are extremely old and in very bad conditions, no renovations were done for more than 14-15 years.

How to improve:
“Save the Children played a vital role in improving the school’s environment, proven by the new enrolments we constantly get from children in our locality” says Hussein. I hope we can get two more new classrooms to take in even more students. Also, the copybooks provided to children have been very helpful, earlier, children were unable to get copybooks for weeks. The government does not provide anything to the school, we have to get our own electricity, water, chalk, pens, papers, water and whatever else needed. To the extent that when the Ministry of Education asks for a report, I go to the local market to write and print it, paying for it myself.
I look eagerly for Save the Children and the European Union to continue their support to our school and the education sector in Sudan. I know EQUIP Program has been ongoing for three years now, but I truly hope it gets extended for another three years so everyone can witness the fruits they sowed and see the outcomes of their efforts.

Background / Project information
Education Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP), funded by the European Union, started in 2020 and continues till 2024, with the aim of improving the basic education sector in Sudan, with particular attention to the most marginalized groups living in vulnerable situations, including migrants, IDPs and refugees, especially girls, as well as children with disabilities. The program runs in four states; Khartoum, Blue Nile, Red Sea and South Kordofan, serving 180 schools and over 60,000 students.
