Improving agricultural techniques in North Darfur | تحسين التقنيات الزراعية في شمال دارفور

عبد الله الطيب أحمد، مزارع يبلغ من العمر 25 عاما من قرية البيضاء في كلمندو، كان عبد الله أحد المشاركين مع 30 مزارعاً في البرنامج التدريبي الذي أقامته منظمة رعاية الطفولة في المزرعة المجتمعية، والذي يهدف الى نشر المعرفة وزيادة خبرات المزارعين ومساعدتهم وتعليمهم طرق جديدة في الزراعة.
يقول عبد الله: "عندما أتت منظمة رعاية الطفولة وتحدثت مع لجنة المجتمع عن إجراء برنامج تدريبي لتعليم طرق وتقنيات متقدمة في الزراعة، كنت متحمسا للغاية للتسجيل في البرنامج".

من مشاركات منظمة رعاية الطفولة والوزارة الألمانية الإتحادية للتعاون الاقتصادي والتنمية في القطاع الزراعي إنشاء (مخزن للمحاصيل) لتخزين المحصول وبيعه بعد إنتهاء الموسم، وإنشاء دورات تدريبية في المزرعة المجتمعية لتعليم المزارعين كيفية حماية المحاصيل من الآفات والحشرات التي تهدد نمو المحصول.

يقول عبد الله: "لقد كان مذهلاً ما تم تعليمه لنا في الدورة التدريبية عن زراعة أنواع مختلفة من المحاصيل مثل الفول والسمسم والذرة بإستخدام أبعاد مختلفة للزراعة بين المحاصيل تقدر ب 50 سم للفول و75 سم للذرة، حيث وضح لنا الأستاذ أن هذه الطريقة ستتيح للنباتات أن تنمو بطريقة سليمة وتحمي المحصول من سوسة الحبوب والتي ستسقط على الأرض عند القفز من نبات الى آخر وتقتلها حرارة الشمس".

بدأ عبد الله وجيرانه المزارعين بتطبيق الطرق الجديدة التي تعلموها في الدورة التدريبية وقارنوها مع طرق زراعتهم التقليدية وقد كانو مذهولين بإنتاج مزرعة عبدالله وقت الحصاد من زيادة المحصول.

يقول عبد الله: "لأكون صادقا، لم اتوقع في البداية أن المساحة الزراعية سوف تتغير كثيراً كما قالوا لنا، قبل ذلك كنا معتادين على الزراعة التقليدية ورمي البذور في كل خطوتين، لذلك قررت تجربة الطريقة الجديدة في مزرعتي، وقد كنت مذهولاْ من النتيجة إذ كان محصول الفول ينمو سليماْ وبسرعة، لذلك قررت أن أقسم الأرض لأقارن كمية الإنتاج نهاية الموسم، حتى الآن أستطيع القول أن الطريقة الجديدة أفضل بكثير من التقليدية، وسوف أحصد أكثر بكثير من الموسم السابق".

بجانب توفير البذور والتدريب للمزارعين، قامت منظمة رعاية الطفولة ببناء منشأة (مخزن المحاصيل أو الحبوب)، حيث يمكن للمزارع تخزين محصوله في القرية كل موسم، وفقاْ لمعايير معينة تضمن حفظ المحصول لما بعد موسم الجفاف.

"سابقاْ كنا نضطر لبيع المخزون عندما تبدأ الآفات في أكل المحصول، وفي بعض الأحيان كنا نبيع المحصول بنصف السعر الاصلي لنشتري محاصيل طازجة، لكن الحمد لله الآن بعد أن أنشأت منظمة رعاية الطفولة  مخزن المحاصيل نستطيع أن نخزن المحصول ونترك البعض كحبوب لزراعتها في الموسم القادم".

Abdullah is a 25-year-old farmer from Kalemando, North Darfur. Alongside 30 other farmers, he took part in a training held by Save the Children. The ‘village farm’ course is designed to spread knowledge on agriculture and to introduce new farming techniques.

Abdullah says: “When Save the Children came and talked with the community committee about a training on advanced agricultural methods, I was very excited to enroll in the program”.

One of the innovations for the agricultural sector in Sudan is the construction of a crop bank to store and sell crops after the end of the season. The farmers also learn how to protect crops from pests and insects that threatening their harvests.

Abdullah says: “We learnt about growing different types of crops such as beans, sesame and sorghum and using different distances between plants, such as 50 cm for beans and 75 cm for sorghum. The teacher explained that this method will allow plants to grow in a proper way and protect crops from weevils, which will fall to the ground when jumping from one plant to another and then die from the sun’s heat.”

Abdullah and his neighbours started to apply the new methods they learned in the course and compared them with their traditional farming methods. They were surprised by the increase in production their harvests.

Abdullah explains: “To be honest, I did not expect that much improvement before. Traditionally, we throw the seeds every two steps and I wanted to compare the methods. So, I decided to split up the land and use the old method on one part and the new method on the other part. I was amazed by the result as the bean crop was growing healthy and quickly through the new method. We harvested much more”.

Besides providing seeds and training to farmers, Save the Children has built a facility (crop or cereal bank) where the farmer can store their crops every season in the village, according to certain criteria that ensures the crop is usable past the dry season.

“Previously we had to sell inventory when pests started damaging the crop and sometimes, we would even sell the crop at half price to buy fresh crops. After the crop bank has been constructed, we can store the crop and leave some as grains to plant next season”.
