SUDAN: EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND CHILDREN IN SOUTH KORDOFAN AND WEST DARFUR TO BENEFIT FROM IMPROVED ACCESS TO EDUCATION AND LEARNING AS “EDUCATION CANNOT WAIT” (ECW) CONSORTIUM PARTNERS LAUNCH MULTI-YEAR RESILIENCE PROGRAMME
Khartoum, 26 September 2022 – Eighty-five thousand children in 171 schools in South Kordofan and West Darfur will benefit from improved access to education services aimed at increasing enrolment and retention of students, as four leading national and international non-governmental organisations, Save the Children, Global Aid Hand, International Aid Services, and Norwegian Refugee Council, launch the “Education Cannot Wait” (ECW) consortium.
The programme aims to alleviate the ongoing education crisis in Sudan and reduce the number of out-of-school children in the two states, by rehabilitating school buildings, constructing water and sanitation facilities, training teachers in inclusive education for children with disabilities, providing accelerated learning programmes targeting out-of-school mothers, and improving awareness of parents and communities on the importance of education, especially for girls.
This intervention comes at a critical time for Sudan as schools begin to open, where approximately seven million out of the 19 million school-aged children – or one-in-three – are not in school, due to the ongoing economic crisis, conflicts, and the lack of investment in education.
The programme, funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the United Nation’s global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, aims to transform the delivery of education in emergencies by building resilience and improving the capacity of local actors to ensure children can access their rights to education, development, protection, and participation.
The capacity-building component of the programme will focus on training teachers on child protection, boosting literacy, positive discipline, inclusive education, mental health and psychosocial support, and accelerated learning.
